Ieva Iltnere in her latest solo exhibition Beautiful Fragile Nature explores the fragility of personality, human relationships and environment. Thirteen new paintings are made in 2008.
The artist says: “The subject of this exhibition is solitude, the fragility of the moment, the transient nature of beauty, the eternal striving for the ideal, the distinction between beauty and ugliness, and the tragicomic human existence.”
Ieva Iltnere is one of the most outstanding and creative artists of her generation. She participates in exhibitions since 1978. Iltnere has created her system of images with a familiar and particularly original style. The artist’s formal stylistics is influenced by the language of old, blurred, black-and-white photographs with their subdued lighting and painterly half-tones taken from an ascetic, monochrome range. Her canvases feature a subtle colouring and discrete intonation. She pays particular attention to lights and shades as well as composition. Each work is permeated by a deeply personal attitude.
In her early works Iltnere took up the theme of family, mother and child, and intimate aspects of life. The artist elevated everyday phenomena up to the sacred level. Today, inspired by various cultures of the world, 20th century Western avant-garde art and Biblical subjects (solo exhibition “Stories”, 2002), the painter synthesises traditional painterly means and conceptual approach.
The solo exhibition “Beautiful Fragile Nature” develops the theme of human relationship to space started by her show “Eight Rooms” (19.04.2007-12.05.2007) at Riga Gallery. This exhibition invited to nominate Iltnere for Vilhelms Purvītis Prize in visual arts.
