LATVIA / USA Paintings from Kārlis Leiškalns' collection

03.05.2005. - 14.05.2005.

Raimonds Staprāns was born in Riga 1926. During the war his family had to flee to Germany; in 1947 he moved to USA. In spite of this tragic fortune he managed to achieve a successful career. He received professional education at the University of Washington in Seattle and University of California in Berkeley. Staprāns’ paintings had been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in USA and elsewhere, including the artist’s solo exhibition at the State Museum of Art in Riga 1991. In 2004 his paintings were selected along many other American artists’ works for the representative exposition “50 Years of Californian Art” at San Jose Museum of Art. Staprāns’ works are included in collections of Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Oakland Museum of California, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum and State Museum of Art in Riga as well as in private collections, including that of the press magnate Rupert Merdock. In 2006 there will be the artist’s 80th jubilee exhibition and catalogue at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.
Staprāns’ painting is sometimes typified as “abstract realism”. Although his works feature real objects like chairs, kitchen equipment or oranges, the artist has stressed the meaning of colour and structure in his paintings. His favourite motifs are also views of the California Bay, depicting boats by landing places or architectonic motifs. His works reveal clear composition and laconism, dazzling and intense colours, attaining colour nuances typical of the Californian light.
The exhibition shows works from Kārlis Leiškalns’ private collection.
