PAINTINGS

15.12.2005. - 21.01.2006.

In the new paintings (13 large scale paintings) Edvards Grube confirms his interest about the most essential of painting, according to artists words: „What I want in art is to do things which can be done only in painting”. The artist still is faithfull to conrete subjects, motives - the theme of mother and child, doors, windows, still natures with unusual subjects – music instruments or fragments of them, pottery or pieces of them, bread, mushrooms. Though still actual is „how” to paint besides „what” to paint. New works shows Edvards Grube’s growing intension toward laconic forms and demonstrate artists particular attitude towards light and color as to the bearers of emotional tension and moods – he makes experiments with different textures, color. In the works one can suspect an expresive, strong movement of brush. Beside compositions in more silent colors there outbreak contrasts of lustrous red, yellow and white („Doors”, 2005, „Light”, 2005), but transparent, clourful laquer the artist uses both – as an element of contrasts and as unifying element in compositions.
In retrospection there can be seen the most characterizing artist’s works, made between 70.s and 90.s in XX cenury.
Edvards Grūbe entered in latvian art scene in 1960s, confiming himself as a bright master of tonal painting. The artist has become as one of the most influential forses in latvian painting school. His talant synthesizes symbolic, nationally significant subjects (mother, mother with child) with expressive language of modernism. The paintings of Edvards Grūbe can be characterized by substantiality, simplicity and clearness of forms.
