LEONARDS LAGANOVSKIS
8th OF MARCH. VODKA, SEX, PERFUMES

08.03.2007. - 28.03.2007.

Leonards Laganovskis’ solo exhibition “The 8th of March. Vodka, Sex, Perfumes” is on view at the Riga Gallery 1st and 2nd floor from 8 to 28 March. The show will exhibit about 100 works, including the most diverse means of visual arts – paintings, drawings, photos and computer graphics.

The main theme of the exhibition is pleasures – things and habits that manipulate the human being, making him/her more or less dependant from either vodka, wine, eroticism or computer games. The artist has thought about hedonistic matters in this show, developing the subject initiated in his solo exhibition “The Right to Desire” at the Riga Gallery three years ago. It received the Annual Prize of the Artists’ Union of Latvia in the category The Best Solo Exhibition.

Most varied kinds of Vodka will be showed in the series of large-size digital prints and paintings exhibited in “The 8th of March. Vodka, Sex, Perfumes”, for example, Perspektivnaya, Restorannaya Memorialnaya, Spalnaya Snotvornaya or even Osamabinladenskaya. This time there will also be a chance to engage in the artist’s favorite language games – one of his main themes and sources of inspiration. As the artist has stated: “Many things in this exhibition will be aimed at a visitor with humanitarian knowledge, non-prepared spectator will not understand everything”. Laganovskis has taken up analysis of language through art quite a long ago – language, letters, texts have always been very important and brought into play in his works many times. Visually depicted intellectual constructions are the basis of Laganovskis’ art, containing both irony and humor.

Sex and eroticism mentioned in the title shows in all exhibited works, but one should especially mention the series of drawings titled Perfumes that demonstrate the artist’ s ideas regarding perfume bottle design. Female and male anatomy is used as a source of inspiration.

Laganovskis’ art is particularly intellectual. He is interested in social themes mediated and reflected through his art: power, politics and society, relationships between the man and the woman, grouping of the world according to gender.

Leonards Laganovskis (b. 1955) graduated from the Stage Design Department of the Latvian Academy of Art. His modes of artistic expression range from drawings and paintings to photography and objects. The artist has acquired wide international experience, living in Germany for a long period and taking part in art life there, organizing solo exhibitions and participating in group exhibitions abroad. He has received several international grants: Kunst-Werke, Berlin (Germany, 1991), Cultur Senat, Berlin (Germany 1995), The Banff Center for the Arts (Canada, 1992) etc.
Laganovkis has worked as the Chief Artist of the Riga City.
The artist’s works are found in the collections of the Latvian National Art Museum, Neue Berliner Kunstverein collection in Berlin, Kupferstich Kabinett in Berlin, Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum in Rutgers University in New York, Estonian Art Museum in Tallinn, significant private collections in Latvia and abroad.
